Get Inspired with A Pottawattamie Almanac

Our monthly programming series, A Pottawattamie County Almanac, doesn't end when the weather gets cool. You still have two more chances to join this one-of-a-kind programming series before the end of the season.

This programming series is in its inaugural year combines environmental education & artistry to connect people from all walks of life and a variety of backgrounds to the natural world. By combining creative & artistic pursuits such as creative writing, drawing, & music with activities such as species identification & nature education our program participants interact with nature in a new way. Each program session is hands on & explores a different theme based on the natural rhythm of the seasons. Guided by naturalist Aldo Leopold's classic work, A Sand County Almanac, each session focuses on essays & writings that augment and complement the program focus & sessions also include "Mother Nature's Calendar" - a monthly listing of natural events to expect in our area - as well as musical performances from program director Ron Cisar.

We have two remaining program sessions for the 2018 season and encourage you to attend and see what the A Pottawattamie County Almanac is all about. Each session is a stand alone unit so you don't have to attend every program to reap the benefits of this unique educational experience. Sessions are just $15.00 per person & include your admission to the park. To maintain an effective class size we do limit the number of participants so pre-registration is highly recommended. Check out the topics for our next two programming sessions listed below and register yourself today!

November 10th - 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

November's program will focus on the topic "Waste Not, Want Not" with study centered on nature's recyclers. Following the classroom portion you will head outdoors on a guided "Signs of the Season" hike through the hills discovering the changes that have occurred in recent weeks as fall moves into winter.

The final class of the year-long series will discuss "Animal Adaptations in Winter" including a discussion on winter bird feeding and the types of feeders and birdseed that will help attract a diversity of avian species to your backyard. Participants will then head outdoors for a winter hike into the woods looking for inspiration for their nature journals. This class will conclude with sharing the important contributions and words of wisdom of various important naturalists such as Jane Goodall, Sigurd Olson & Rachel Carson along with a very special Native American story about the earth.
