Binoculars are a great tool when you head out on your scavenger hunt but they aren't necessary if you don't have any on hand.  Have a smartphone? Consider downloading a digital field guide app like The Audubon Bird Guide & the Merlin Bird ID app by Cornell Lab. Both of these apps are free to download & are great resources you can carry in your pocket.
