Join the Loess Hills Nordic Ski Patrol for Outdoor Emergency Care Training

The Loess Hills Nordic Ski Patrol is an invaluable partner organization, patrolling trails at Hitchcock Nature Center, supporting PCC staff during events, & offering important assistance to park visitors in need. We are so grateful for their continued support of our parks & our mission.

Outdoor Emergency Care is the signature first aid class offered by the National Ski Patrol and is a base requirement to become a ski patrol member. This class is co-sponsored by the Loess Hills Volunteer Nordic Patrol and the UNO Outdoor Venture Center, and follows the same standards set forth by the U.S. Department of Transportation for EMT-Bs. It is intended for prospective ski patrollers as well as outdoor enthusiasts. Subjects covered include an overview of human anatomy and physiology, patient assessment, soft and hard tissue injuries, environmental illness and injuries, sudden illnesses, triage, accident scene management and long term care.

Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) Class

Classroom: Thursday, 15 August – 5 December 2019 (7:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.) at the University of Nebraska at Omaha -  Health and Kinesiology Building

Practical Exam: Saturday, 23 November 2019 (8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.) at Hitchcock Nature Center

Written Exam: Thursday, 5 November 2019 (7:00 p.m. – 9:45 p.m.)

Make-up exams: Thursday, 12 December 2019 (7:00 p.m. – 9:45 p.m.)

Basic Life Support Class: Saturday, 7 December 2019 (8:00 a.m. - Noon)

The total cost for this 15-week class is $246. OEC student price is broken down into several different collection points by the National Ski Patrol and the Outdoor Venture Center. Students are required to join the National Ski Patrol ($60), pay OEC course registration fees through the national office ($60) and purchase the required textbook from the publisher ($96). There is also a $30 lab fee to cover the cost of instruction materials provided by the Outdoor Venture Center.

OEC certification requires a valid Basic Life Support certification or CPR with AED for the Professional Rescuer. The OVC offers a class on Saturday, December 7 and it must be registered for separately with the Outdoor Venture Center ($27).
