Mt. Crescent prepares for ski season by expanding snowmaking pond

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

It’s true—the winter season is becoming more variable, which means some years are great for snow and snowmaking in Iowa, and others, not so much. One of the best things a ski resort can do to combat our wild midwest weather is to expand its snowmaking capabilities, and that’s exactly what we’ve done at Mt. Crescent Ski Area!

The newly expanded snowmaking pond is now three times larger, which will allow it to hold more cold water. Why’s that important? Cold water is the secret ingredient to that beautiful snow powder that makes for perfect ski and snowboarding conditions.

Expanding the area’s snowmaking capacity and efficiency will create a better guest experience overall and should help our team produce more snow in the early season and allow us to extend our snowmaking sessions later into the season as well. More snow and longer snowmaking sessions will allow us to have as much terrain open as possible for winter family fun, all season long.

Previously during periods of warmer weather or a lack of snowfall, the smaller snowmaking pond could not keep up with demand. At times, this caused delays in snowmaking and a lack of snow, which meant fewer ski and snowboarding opportunities for guests, and no one wants that! Our team is very excited to be able to grow the ski area’s capacity and provide a positive experience for our awesome visitors.

Now all that's left to do is to fill 'er up!

In the works: Our first stage of electrical upgrades is nearly complete! We are planning to make additional electrical upgrades next spring and summer which will allow our team to run more snowmaking machines at once, providing better coverage so we can keep as many runs open as possible. Keep an eye on our Facebook or Instagram pages for updates.

Mt. Crescent Ski Area offers 9 runs for skiing, snowboarding, and sledding fun and 2 chair lifts, all tucked away in the beautiful and globally significant Loess Hills.

Oh, and don’t forget: Season passes are available now for the lowest price of the season at $149 for Pottawattamie County residents and $199 for out-of-county residents. Don’t miss out on these amazing prices, available only until October 31st! Get yours today at skicrescent.com.
