Below, take a moment to meet Pottawattamie Conservation volunteers, Scott and Sabra:
While this is only Scott and Sabra’s second year as camp hosts with us, they are no novices! They have been hosting for the past five years at parks from Texas to all the way up to Minnesota and Michigan!
Scott and Sabra help with a wide variety of jobs around the campground, from: cutting grass, cleaning cabins, picking up trash, stacking and delivering firewood to campers, and more. Talk about going the extra mile!
Scott and Sabra love to make sure campers have a positive experience while at Hitchcock and will carve out some time to talk and get to know them. Their main goal is assisting park rangers and making their job a bit easier.
“Being a host is easy when the park staff is easy to work with and we feel appreciated.”
Feel free to reach out and say hi if you see these amazing camp hosts out and about!
Scott and Sabra are both Air Force veterans and started volunteering as camp hosts after retirement. They have even helped out with dog rescues on some weekends! Scott has especially enjoyed volunteering for the Special Olympics, which led to him becoming the NC Region Coordinator, and Sabra enjoys painting and has a wealth of knowledge as a previous EMT of 12 years and Home Depot specialist. They both enjoy spending time with their seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Volunteers like Scott and Sabra make a huge difference for our small organization by keeping our parks beautiful, providing a great experience for visitors, and supporting local conservation efforts that protect wildlife, pollinators, and us humans, too! Their dedication, along with all of our other amazing volunteers, allows us to reach more people about the importance of natural spaces and be good stewards of the land. We truly couldn't do it without our passionate volunteers and can't thank them enough for everything they do to support conservation work.
We are always looking for new faces to help us keep Pottawattamie Conservation parks beautiful and educate the public. Whether you prefer outdoors or indoors, our volunteer opportunities provide impactful ways for you to make a difference, connect with nature and support our community.
Regular volunteers have the option of setting their own schedule and are rewarded with educational opportunities and other benefits. Volunteers also receive an annual park permit and a discount on gift shop merchandise as a thank you for their efforts.
