Introduction to "A Land Ethic Workshop" (Free)

Join us as we kick off our 2022 season of "A Land Ethic Workshop." This free, introductory program will be held at Hitchcock Nature Center and is perfect for anyone with an interest in conservation & a desire to develop a better understanding of the natural world outside their own front door. Join us and celebrated educator Ron Cisar as we introduce participants to our 10-month long programming series, "A Land Ethic Workshop".

Participants in this introductory session will study & learn:

  • How one oak affects the biological community & reveals secrets of the past
  • The ecological significance of Iowa's Loess Hills landform.
  • The biographical history of Iowa's own Aldo Leopold & his "Land Ethic"

This program is free for all attendees & is intended for participants age 14 & over with an interest in the natural world, no experience or prior knowledge is required to participate. Online pre-registration is required as space is limited. For questions not answered online please call 712-545-3283.

About "A Land Ethic Workshop"

Following the life work of naturalist Aldo Leopold, participants in this unique, 10 month-long programming series will gain a deeper understanding of our local ecosystems through study and discussion of seasonal ecology and will connect with others who share a passion for nature.

About Ron Cisar

"A Land Ethic Workshop" is created & taught by biologist and Leopold scholar Ron Cisar.  Ron taught science and biology in the Omaha Public Schools district for 32 years and at Iowa Western Community College as assistant Professor Emeritus until 2017. He is nationally recognized as a singer-songwriter, has spent time leading educational and research programs in national parks, and is the recipient of numerous awards for excellence in education.

  • Woodland & Prairie Wildflowers - April 9th, 9:00 a.m.
  • Morels, Fungi & Lichen - May 21st, 9:00 a.m.
  • Freshwater Ecosystems - June 18th, 9:00 a.m.
  • Butterfly Basics - July 9th, 9:00 a.m.
  • A Chorus of Insects - August 13th, 9:00 a.m.
  • Ornithology 101 - September 10th, 9:00 a.m.
  • The Science of Fall - October 15th, 9:00 a.m.
  • Nature's Recyclers - November 12th, 9:00 a.m.
  • Winter Survival Secrets - December 3rd, 9:00 a.m.

Cancellation Policy

Guests may cancel their reservation for a full refund up to 1 week (7 days) prior to the first day of the event by calling 712-545-3283 & speaking with staff directly. Cancellations received less than 7 days in advance of the event will not be refunded. Program fees for events cancelled by Pottawattamie Conservation for any reason will be refunded.
