May Hitch Hike | McIntosh Pioneer Cemetery

This page includes details on a past event. For a current list of upcoming Pottawattamie Conservation events, please visit our calendar.

Join us Tuesday, May 16th at 7:00 p.m. for the first hike of our 2023 Hitch Hike series! This is a special guided hike through a section of the Loess Hills that was acquired by Pottawattamie Conservation in November 2022 in memory of long-time Honey Creek resident and conservation advocate, Doris Ferguson.

Your journey will begin with a walk along a Loess Hills ridge top through the scenic prairie to reach the McIntosh Pioneer Cemetery, founded in 1874. Along the way, you'll learn more about the plants, animals, and history of the prairie and enjoy the spring wildflowers including blue-eyed grass, puccoons, and locoweed.

This event is hosted in partnership with long-time park volunteer and prairie pioneer cemetery historian expert Glenn Pollock. Thank you, Glenn!

Pre-registration is not required for this event, although free-will donations will be gratefully accepted and used to fund additional free and low-cost public programming at your county parks.

Free with $5 park entry or a park membership which can be purchased online here.

Weather permitting. Please meet us at the Loess Hills Lodge.

Pets: Well-behaved dogs are permitted to accompany their owners but must be leashed at all times. Please be sure to pick up and properly dispose of all pet waste throughout the hike and anytime you venture with your pup. Please note: You may be asked to remain toward the end of the group if there is a large number of participants and disruptive pets may be asked to leave the group.

About Our 2023 Hitch Hike Series:

Hitch Hikes are designed to introduce visitors to Hitchcock Nature Center as well as the Loess Hills. The series begins with a moderate-level hike and will get progressively more challenging as we build up to more difficult and longer hikes in the fall. Whether you join us for one or all hikes in the series, you'll build a deeper connection to the natural world around you, learn to identify native plants and wildlife, and have fun!

Water bottles, bug spray, & sunblock are all recommended. Please dress for the weather & wear appropriate footwear.

2023 programming is sponsored by the Pottawattamie Conservation Foundation.
