Trail Work Volunteer Signup | Afternoon Shift | National Trails Day

This event is held in coordination with National Trails Day, an annual celebration dedicated to empowering everyone to become a trail steward and leave outdoor spaces better than we found them.

Grab a shovel and help reroute a trail with the Loess Hills Nordic Ski Patrol on National Trails Day!

This volunteer event is perfect for hardworking helpers who aren't afraid to get a little dirty while putting the finishing touches on a rerouted trail segment and assisting with trail repair on National Trails Day. Due to the steep topography in the Loess Hills, a portion of Moonseed Trail has suffered significant erosion and trail damage from heavy rains. We need YOUR help to reroute a large portion of this trail and make it more sustainable.

Pre-registration is required. Please meet at the Heartwood Pavilion at Hitchcock Nature Center. Training, a safety briefing, and lunch (at the beginning of the shift) will be provided. Before registering, be sure to read our Activity Liability Waiver here.

What to wear and bring:

  • Long pants
  • Closed-toe shoes
  • Hat or head covering
  • Work gloves
  • Reusable water bottle (water refill stations will be available)

Rules and considerations:

  • Because of the intensity of this work, please do not bring children under 12 years old or dogs. Bring them back another day to blaze the trail segment you helped create!
  • Park volunteers do not need to pay park entrance fees, so drive on through those pay stations carefree.

This volunteer event is sponsored by the Loess Hills Ski Nordic Patrol. Learn more about this amazing volunteer group here. This event is weather-permitting. In the event of inclement weather, we will attempt to reschedule. Thank you!
